I don't know how many tech geeks I have on my flist anymore, but does anyone have a program outside of VirtualDub that is good for clipping/screencapping? For some reason VirtualDub does not work on my computer... every single file I open, regardless of how new or old the file is, ends up looking like this.

The files in question have been tested on other computers and open in VirtualDub fine on other computers - and it does this no matter which version of VirtualDub I run. So either it's my computer or it's VirtualDub. VirtualDub used to work fine, too, this all started probably five or sixth months ago, I just haven't really fiddled with it.

Any help, or pointing me towards guides, is greatly appreciated.

This does wonderful screen capping as well as opens almost everything.
It has never stalled or caused any problems...
First get the program and then all the extras...
a most wonderful program, and no spywhere!!!!

Well, that certifies it has something to do with my computer because the files are doing the same thing in IrfanView. That's not cool, I wonder if it's a codec issue.

I just remembered looking at that picture again, that it still might not be your computer. I had a copy of that movie which did the same thing when I tried to do screen caps.
It had some kind os security buffer on it.
Try another movie before you do anything else.
A lot of disney movies do the same thing.
It you need certain Conqueror of Shambala screen caps, you might try here:

Oh no, it's every singe .avi file I've tried; and not just anime. Shamballa was just the most recent one I pulled up because I was gonna work on an AMV.

Also, if it were the case of it being the file; why does it do that in the VirtualDub on my laptop but that same file does not do that in the same version of VirtualDub on my desktop? Doesn't make any sense to me.

It's possible that, graphically, V-Dub and your laptop just don't get along. Laptops are typically a little graphics underpowered when compared to desktops though.
Or it could be the processor is just unable to handle the load of V-Dub.
That's just my hunches though.

Ok, you might want to try to get an update on your video card drivers, sometimes they get goofy for no reason at all. Or uninstall your video card and re-install it. I try the simplest solutions first.

I agree, update those video drivers. It can correct a LOT of the weirdest problems you'd never expect.
