Aha, oh my god I feel like so much fail because I just got why 5/20 is RoyEd day. I apparently did not even know until the beginning of this month that there was even a Roy/Ed "day" in the first place. I am far removed from the fandom, sigh. Oh well.

Diligently pounding out my rewrite of my bigbang-fic-which-is-due-on-Monday-aha-it's-almost-June. If I work tomorrow like I was able to today, I should get it done. There isn't much different in the second draft, just some expanded-upon scenes. I am unjustifiably proud of this fic, heh. (Look ma, Catie can write FMA fic that doesn't spawn its own AU! IT CAN HAPPEN.)

So thoroughly worn out by work. Last day of the fiscal month is tomorrow. Then we get to start this dance over again next week. Last week of the month is mini-vacation-over-Memorial Day, which is sorely needed and promises to be interesting, if only because I've never really gone on vacation with my mother as an "adult."

Picked up "The Last Unicorn" from the $5 bin at Wal-Mart, that makes me inordinately happy to have it again. I've really been wracking up the non-Disney animated movies lately, Anastasia, Prince of Egypt, Road to El Dorado - all the shinies! All of them! I fell off my "collecting Disney movies" train, and almost at the completion, too. I need to get back on that, I think I'm only missing four or five movies, and all of them the most recent ones.

This weekend's goals include cleaning ALL the things, catching up on anime I've gotten behind on and attempting to pound out a (probably fluffy, 60% chance of smut) RoyEd fic for the unplanned holiday. Oh and probably Avengers because I need my fix, dammit. Also Jeremy Renner's ass.

comments

Yay I survived working the night shift - okay, it's not the night night shift, but when you're used to day shift it's a bit of a difference - although man, it sucked. There's only three days left until the fiscal month ends and I'm short by, oh, about ten sales? We'll see if I hit commission this month or not. (I hope I hope I hope, it would be nice to be sitting on a little money now that my car payments are $100 more than what they were two months ago.)

I just got buzzed by a GINORMOUS fucking housefly. Where's my cat when I need her? I'm too tired to stalk it, it's just a housefly and not a wasp. (One summer my parents had an infestation of houseflies that was later traced to a bag of potatoes in the back of the pantry that had turned into mush, but until we discovered the source of the infestation we ALL got very got at swatting flies out of the air with washcloths.) The entire apartment is ... mildly trashed, I need to dust, vacuum, clean the kitchen top to bottom and scrub my fucking bathroom. It's not as bad as it's been, but it's one of those "put your home in order, put your mind in order" kind of thing right now. I need to empty my bedroom of all the piles of shit, I've got BOXES of fandom-ish stuff I would like to sell but I don't know if it's worth it to list on e-bay. Plushies, posters, various bits of fandom bric-a-brack I've accumulated over the years. Anyone have suggestions on where I can list stuff that's not, well, e-bay?

Since my DVR had a spastic meltdown I lost all my scheduled recordings, I can't remember half the shows I was watching because I got so dependent on it, lol. I fail so hard. Anime-wise I'm currently burning through Guilty Crown and, well, actually enjoying it. It's been a long time since I've watched a show and I'm like OH GOD NEXT EPISODE NOW PLZ WHAT DO YOU MEAN I'M TEN MINUTES LATE FOR WORK. My current "season" slate is Accel World; Eureka Seven AO; Fairy Tail; Fate/Zero S2; Hiiro no Kakera; Hyouka; and Jormungand. With the exclusion of Fairy Tail, everything is new to this season. All my long-running series have ended, orz.

I've been reading a lot lately too, since my parents got me a Nook for my birthday. Currently working my way through all of Christopher Moore's books, re-reading the ones I have read and enjoying the ones I haven't. Currently on Lamb (for about the seventh time, that book is amazing).

Writing-wise I haven't done much lately. Poking and prodding at my werewolf bigbang - which is, of course, FMA ... but not my Nightbreed AU. It's an actual canon werewolf fic. Kinda. It's hard to explain, I can't wait to finish it and post it, I'm quite excited. It's been a long time since I've written some one-off fiction that isn't connected to a universe I've built.

Chicago in two weeks, woo!

comments

(A "bento" for those unaware, is a pre-packaged meal.) There really is not much more to the series than that; it's an entertaining little jumble of gratuitous fighting and ... bentos. There is no deeper storyline, there is nothing particularly stand-out about this title. It was an entertaining, if ultimately forgettable jaunt. The characters were really nothing to write home about, all various stereotypes that may be found in harem or fighting anime - from the "Ice Queen" (her nom de guerre, it says all you need to know about the character), to the RPS-writing fangirl, to the utterly generic lead character, whose name I've already forgotten.

If these sort of shows are to your particular taste; or if you have a hankering for marked-down unagi, you might enjoy this show.
According to all the news outlets, The Avengers made 200.1 million dollars this weekend. Alone. That crushed the box office record into tiny itty bitty pieces. 200.1 million dollars. The mind boggles. Of course I contributed my share, what with going to the midnight showing Thursday. And a 3D showing on Saturday. And a regular showing today.

Shut up I adored it.

It's a crappy sketch and I kind of have developed this really random thing for Hawkeye and <strike>Jeremy Renner's magnificent ass</strike> stuff. And then I went to look at references for costume and discovered that, uh, apparently Jeremy Renner is left-handed! WHOOPS. I would flip the image but comic!canon Hawkeye is a righty so six of one, half dozen of the other.

In conclusion I adore The Avengers, Marvel has earned a fangirl for life and DC needs to get out of the movie business, they make comic book movies look bad. (Dark Knight Rises is the only exception to this ultimatum.)

PS Where is my Hawkeye & Black Widow movie? I want it. Yesterday. Essentially, they boil down to producing an "idol", which in Japan is essentially a celebrity, a star who sings and performs and does everything under the sun. The anime follows all the possible idols in studio 765 PRO throughout their path of becoming popular idols.

Frankly, you don't even have to know that there's a game to watch an enjoy this series. I picked it up because cuddlefish is a huge fan of the games and this way I know what she's talking about. I did not expect to enjoy the show as much as I did! It hit a lot of satisfying notes in that regard. You were really cheering for the girls of 765 PRO throughout their respective journeys.

I do feel like it was quite a bit busy with so many characters, but everyone got their chance to shine. A lot of the characters could be boiled down to one or two-note characters - there's the tomboy, the animal lover, the space princess, the twins, the spunky one, the airhead, et cetera - but I don't feel that the show suffered for it. You get to see performances; both the finished product and all the work that they put in to it to get it to that point. It's an idealized peek behind the curtain, kind of like Bakuman, in that respect.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show, though, and I do recommend it. It's perky and upbeat and even when bad things happen (and they do) they fight their way through.

comments

It's off the wall, full of dick jokes and random nudity and really weird meta-call-outs. It also has a tendency to carry its jokes way too far. At the same time, there are ongoing story-arcs, often times with clear resolution that then loops right back around and intentionally reverts to status quo (with commentary by the cast pointing out how ridiculous everything is). It's silly and random and bizarre.

Something interesting about the jokes I've noticed is that on the surface they're funny, but the more you know about anime, about its tropes, or Japanese culture in general the funnier they get. You can enjoy it if you do not know all that much about the aforementioned things but the more you know, the more entertaining it is.

I honestly cannot say if I recommend Gintama or not. It's one of those series you have to experience for yourself to determine if you'll find it hilarious or offensive - or maybe, like Family Guy - just a fair bit of both.

comments

I barely remember any of it at this point, I recall that I enjoyed it so I picked up Fate/Zero when it aired in the winter season. As I fell massively behind in my watching, I am just now completing the first season - in time for the second season to have started.

First let me express my dissatisfaction with this new trend of the individual 12 and 13 episode seasons when one season can't truly be watched without the other. It's frustrating to me that it seems to be a "thing" now to split the series like this - I can understand if it's a gamble on the first season and you're unsure of whether or not the show will continue but that certainly did not seem the case here. Episode 13, the "end" of season 1 - was not a closing episode in the slightest, and there was no pause or recap when the first episode of season 2 started. It felt like - and will likely be compiled, in the future - as one series. It's just aggravating to me personally that it's considered by most two separate shows because of the season split.

Anyway. This series explores the events of the Fourth Holy Grail War. For those just walking into the Fate series; the Holy Grail War is where seven magi duke it out using proxies - Servants - in order to win the Holy Grail. Each Servant has a class name - Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, etc. They are all heroes from the distant past. Thus it is perfectly reasonable to have an episode where King Arthur, Gilgamesh and Alexander the Great sit around drinking and discussing the true nature of being a king.

It also seems like the set-up for a very bad joke.

I am fully enjoying this series. The animation is very pretty, although the CG does not always mesh very well and when there are issues they are glaring. This is not an "OMG KEEPER" show for me, but it is what I would describe as a "page turner" if it was a book - can't wait for more, can't wait for the end ... will probably never watch it again after that point.

comments

We've got a new lead in Tagiru - who brings to mind Daisuke (Davis) of Adventure 02 fame - and a few new Digimon to go with them. This time, instead of moving into the Digital World the Hunters use their Xros Loaders to go to the DigiQuartz - an alter-world where they hunt and capture rogue Digimon.

This series was pretty by-the-books ... I was enjoying it more than most of the initial Xros Wars, I have to say ... but all that picked up in the last few episodes when ALL THE OTHER GOGGLE-BOY LEADS FROM THE OTHER SEASONS TURNED UP. I am so not even kidding. Taichi, Daisuke, and all the other leads - with their Digimon, of course - turn up for the final battle. And then random Takeru! AND KEN! (Okay, I kinda gargled on my soda with the SURPRISE PAKU ROMI but that's me.) My poor heart couldn't take it.

I, I don't even know. It's totally worth it for the heaping load of META that the end of the series dumps in your lap. Nostalgia factor amped through to 11.

If you like Digimon, I would definitely check out Xros Wars if you haven't already.

comments

Title: Daily Lives of High School Boys (男子高校生の日常)
Episodes: 12
Year: 2012
Studio: Sunrise

What can I say about Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou? Except oh my god I busted my freaking gut. The series shorthand is "Nichibros."

Essentially, this show is a series of two to five minute shorts. The humor is much in the same vein as Gintama - and it is completely ridiculous and completely realistic. It's about a bunch of high school boys being idiots together. There is nothing at all supernatural or fantastic about it, unless you account for their imaginations. For instance, one of the shorts involves one of the many characters with glasses ... losing his glasses. He bursts into the classroom freaking out and enlists everyone to help him find his glasses - which are, incidentally, on his head. One of his friends notices and assumes that everyone KNOWS this and is going along with it as a joke - until they've traveled over half the school and one of the others notices that the glasses are on his head and points it out.

I laughed for so long, and I'm not even joking.

It really doesn't hurt that the main trio reminds me of my ridiculous trio of teenagers who lounge around and rag on the otaku and occasionally try to form a band or debate the merits of different actors. But hell, I adored this show and if it manages a R1 release I will be snapping that up like yesterday.

comments
